Working on Jail Decarceration and Racial Equity in Smaller and Rural Communities (Slides)

10-07-2019 11:02 AM

Nationally, jail populations have grown the most in recent years in rural areas, and these communities are often excluded from reform efforts; rural jurisdictions also have some of the highest racial disparities in their justice systems. This workshop will highlight some of the challenges facing rural jurisdictions, and jurisdictions with significant rural populations, participating in the SJC, feature some new strategies for addressing the particular needs of rural communities in this work, and provide a space for sharing ideas about where the biggest gaps are and how the SJC and the Network can better engage rural jurisdictions and the communities impacted by their jails.
