The Prison Policy Initiative compiled and summarized findings from recent academic literature about racial disparities in pretrial processes. We published it as a briefing with major takeaways and suggestions for alternative data sources (including the Safety and Justice Challenge network) since the BJS hasn't collected new data on this since 2002. We also published a companion Appendix of all the sources we reviewed. The research was originally conducted in response to a request from another advocacy organization hoping for more current stats/talking points about racial disparities in pretrial detention, so we framed our briefing largely around that question.
