Heal and Punish? When Therapy Is the Alternative to Incarceration

01-11-2019 09:43 AM

Host Matt Watkins sits down with Dr. Jacob Ham, clinical psychologist, and the director of the Center for Child Trauma and Resilience at the Icahn School of Medicine at New York City's Mount Sinai, and Dr. Deborah Koetzle, associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the co-author of What Works (and Doesn't) in Reducing Recidivism, to discuss therapy as an alternative to incarceration.

A major focus of the Center for Court Innovation's (CCI) work is designing "alternatives to incarceration", programs that prosecutors and judges can make use of instead of jail or prison. Treatment or therapy is one of those alternatives you hear a lot about-using the moment when someone is caught up in the justice system to try and solve some of the problems that may have gotten them there. But, what does treatment look like? How effective is it? And, what are the challenges to conducting it inside the coercive context of the criminal justice system?
