Stepping Up Strategy Lab

06-10-2019 05:57 PM

The Stepping Up Strategy Lab is a new interactive database of the most innovative and promising programs and practices being used in counties and local jurisdictions across the U.S. (including several SJC sites) to help reduce the disproportionately high prevalence of mental illness in jails and divert more people into treatment.

This new tool serves as a blueprint to help amplify best practices and help counties create comprehensive strategies that are informed by data tracked along Stepping Up’s four key measures:
1. Reduce bookings in jail
2. Reduce length of stay
3. Increase connection to treatment
4. Reduce recidivism

Users can search through more than a hundred real-world examples of the best and most promising ways to reduce mental illness in jails, which are categorized by behavioral health, courts, crisis services, housing, law enforcement, reentry, and more.
All counties and jurisdictions are encouraged to submit their own successfully implemented programs, practices, or policies to the database for consideration. To submit, please click here.

ABOUT STEPPING UP
Since May 2015, nearly 500 counties have passed resolutions to join Stepping Up, a national initiative to reduce the number of people with mental illnesses in jails. Recognizing the critical role local and state officials play in supporting change, the National Association of Counties (NACo), The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) are leading this important national initiative.
